Oh, Toodles!

by Sam · July 2026

For Mathias’s 14th birthday, we did what any sensible family would do: we gave four teenage boys pizza, snacks, soda, and the living room, then hoped for the best.

At first, everything seemed normal. They piled onto the couch, loaded up paper plates with pizza, and settled in to watch TV. I assumed they’d pick something loud, fast, and full of explosions.

Instead, I heard:

“MICKEY MOUSE!”

I looked around the corner, and sure enough, there on the screen was Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Not as a joke for ten seconds, either. They fully committed.

All four of them sang the intro at the top of their lungs.

“M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E!”

Mathias, my 14-year-old son who usually responds to questions with a shrug, was suddenly performing like he’d been preparing for this moment his whole life. And they didn’t stop with the theme song. They answered Mickey’s questions, argued over the right Mouseketool, and absolutely lost it every time Toodles showed up.

At one point, one of them yelled, “OH, TOODLES!” with such genuine excitement that I had to quietly back out of the room before I laughed in their faces.

Later, the house got suspiciously quiet, so I looked outside.

They were playing.

Not standing around outside. Not looking at their phones. Actually playing. Running through the yard, yelling, making up rules, changing them immediately, and laughing like little kids.

This was especially shocking because Mathias does not go outside to play. Ever. If I told him there was fresh air in the backyard, he’d probably ask if it came with Wi-Fi.

Eventually they came back in, spent a while goofing off in Mathias’s room, and then disappeared outside again after dark.

That’s when my parent imagination kicked in.

Were they causing neighborhood mischief? Tagging signs? Roaming the streets like tiny suburban criminals?

Then I heard Mathias’s voice from the yard.

“…nineteen… twenty… twenty-one…”

I stopped and listened.

Hide and seek.

They were outside, in the dark, playing hide and seek.

My 14-year-old son and his friends, who had spent the evening singing Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, were now hiding behind bushes and cars like seven-year-olds with deeper voices.

One of them got found almost immediately because he couldn’t stop laughing. Mathias yelled, “I FOUND YOU!” with the kind of victory usually reserved for winning Olympic gold.

No trouble. No chaos. Just four boys somewhere between childhood and growing up, spending a night eating pizza, singing cartoon theme songs, and playing outside like they had absolutely nothing to prove.

Apparently 14 is old enough to stay up late and eat a ridiculous amount of pizza, but still young enough to shout “Oh, Toodles!” with your whole heart and then go hide behind a shrub.

Our household runs on managed chaos. If yours does too, here’s our free — no signup, just a score and a laugh of recognition.
